Chapter 16

Being a sucker for punishment, Patch drove Jewel to the airport, even went in and stood in line with her until she went through the security checkpoint. Waving good-bye, he watched her turn the corner and head toward the gate for her flight. Once out of sight, his beast made its displeasure known. Patch all but ran to the bathroom, into a stall, to fight the urge to shift and go after her. Fumbling in his pocket, he found the small packet of pills and took three instead of two, the normal dose. Arms wrapped around his waist, he sat, fully dressed, on the commode shaking like a damn junkie waiting for the drugs to take effect.

Thirty minutes later, his beast quieted to a controllable level allowing him to leave the airport. Initially, he planned to head straight to see his mom but even with the extra pills he’d gotten from Jackson earlier today, he wasn’t sure he would make it. He turned off the highway and headed toward BMP headquarters. Patch called Jackson who answered on the second ring. “Grimes?”

Patch explained what happened at the airport and asked for an examination before he went around his family back home.

“You’re not sure of your control over your beast?” Jackson asked.

“No, I’m not. It feels as if I have a hole in my chest and the pain won’t stop. The urge to shift and run is stronger than I’ve ever experienced before.”

“I’ll clear your entrance, come to the lab so someone can check you out,” Jackson said.

Relieved, Patch exhaled. “Thanks.” During the drive his thoughts circled between Jewel, Cory and Leigh. After telling him to pick up Cory, Leigh hadn’t contacted him or his attorney with other demands which wasn’t like her. Not after she discovered Jewel. While he appreciated the small reprieve, it made him wonder what new torturous plan she had up her sleeve.

One thing for certain, he couldn’t survive without his mate. His beast made that abundantly clear. Fighting against your bear was a losing proposition since they were irreparably intertwined. No, he couldn’t give her up, not even for his son. Knowing that didn’t settle his anxiety over the matter because Jewel wouldn’t, couldn’t at this point understand his decision.

“Where are you, Tag?” he murmured as he turned off the main road to reach the complex. So far the Grizzly hadn’t returned his calls which put a wrinkle in his plans to tell Jewel as soon as possible about his beast. He arrived at the security entrance, drove to the back, entered another code and accessed the underground parking lot. Security waved him through as he strode to the lab, wincing every few steps against the clawed swipes from his beast.

“Stop it,” he whispered harshly. “I’m doing all I can here.” Obviously, his beast didn’t agree and swiped against his belly again causing him to stumble.

“Hey, do you need help?”

Patch exhaled and straightened. An older male in a white lab jacket watched him. “Just a disagreement between my beast and I.
